Soul Rest

We all have those moments when we think we've got it all figured out. Whether it's a family argument where you’re so sure you’re right, or a deep-seated belief that your way of doing things is the only way that works, we can all be a little stubborn sometimes. I get it—I'm right there with you.

Today, I want to talk about something Jesus said in Matthew 11:25-30 that might just flip your understanding of wisdom and rest on its head. You see, Jesus didn’t come to pat us on the back for all the ways we think we’ve got life under control. He came to show us a better way—His way, which often doesn’t make sense by the world’s standards.

Jesus starts by thanking God for hiding things from the “wise and learned” and revealing them to little children. Now, let’s be real—most of us like to think we’re pretty wise, especially as we get older. But the older we get, the more we can miss the simple, profound truths Jesus offers us. I know I’ve been guilty of that. We can get so caught up in what we think we know that we’re not really open to learning something new, especially when that “something new” seems to go against everything we’ve experienced in life.

Jesus is saying that sometimes, those who think they’ve got it all figured out—the so-called wise and learned—are actually the ones who miss out on what God is doing. Why? Because His wisdom often looks upside down to us. It’s countercultural. It feels backwards. But it’s precisely because it’s so different from our way of thinking that it has the power to truly transform us.

Think about it: Jesus says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” He’s offering us rest—not just a physical break, but soul-deep rest. The kind of rest that calms the anxiety, quiets the endless to-do lists, and brings peace to our restless hearts. But here’s the catch: to receive that rest, we have to be willing to come to Him like a child. We have to let go of our self-sufficiency, our need to control, our pride in our own wisdom, and simply trust Him.

That’s not easy. Trust me, I know. But Jesus isn’t asking us to figure it all out on our own. He’s inviting us to take His yoke upon us, to learn from Him, because His yoke is easy and His burden is light. When we come to Him, He does the heavy lifting. He carries the weight of our burdens, our worries, our fears, and in exchange, He gives us rest.

So, what does it look like to take on Jesus’ yoke? It means letting His teachings, His wisdom, His presence guide our lives. It means being open to the possibility that His way—though it might seem strange or difficult at first—is actually the better way. And when we do, we find that our burdens become lighter, our hearts more at peace, and our lives more aligned with the purpose God has for us.

If you’re feeling weary today, if you’re carrying a burden that’s just too heavy, hear Jesus’ invitation: “Come to me.” He’s not a harsh taskmaster, but a gentle and humble Savior who wants to give you rest. Real, soul-satisfying rest. It’s there for the taking—if we’ll only come to Him like a child, ready to receive what only He can give.

Let’s stop trying to do it all on our own. Let’s come to Jesus and find the rest we’ve been longing for. Because in Him, we find the peace that surpasses all understanding. And that, my friends, is the kind of rest that can truly change our lives.
