Spiritual Gifts Part 4
On the issue of tongues for all, I can only go by what I read in scripture, and it’s unclear – V5, Paul says he would like everyone to speak in tongues, but I think he’s more speaking that as a wish – end of chapter 12, he rhetorically asks if anyone has all the gifts, with the connotation that the answer is no – however, in Romans 8:26, he says that when we don’t know how to pray, the Spirit intercedes with groanings, which may indicate that it’s normal in the life of a believer, but unclear
Many will point to Acts, that everyone who was baptized in the Spirit, really being baptized into Jesus, they began speaking tongues, but there was a different purpose for those tongues, so it seems more descriptive of what was happening in Acts than what is prescriptive for the life of every believer – I lean toward it being one of many gifts the Spirit gives, but not necessarily one he gives to all
Here is what I know: we are to EAGERLY pursue the gifts, but under the premise that whatever gift you get is not about you, but about displaying the power of God and it must come FROM a motivation of LOVE or it is useless.
1. EAGERLY pursue the gifts. The Spirit wants to bring POWER to your life. Natural vs. Super-natural
2. Prophecy is always meant to encourage and comfort the body of Christ. If you feel like you may have the gift of prophecy, begin walking in it, get with others, the people I mentioned, and begin walking in it – TAKE RISKS
3. Tongues is a prayer language and should be used primarily in the secret place with Jesus. There are other streams of faith that would make provision for public display of tongues, but that is not how we interpret the text here – we honor other houses, but this is the lane we will run in as a church.
