The Lost Sheep

This week we continued the exploration of Matthew 18:10-14, focusing on the theme of humility and the pursuit of the lost. The sermon builds on the previous week's discussion about the disciples' question to Jesus: "Who is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven?" Jesus' response emphasizes that true greatness in God's kingdom is marked by humility, service, and care for the "least of these."

Key Points:

  1. Humility as Greatness:

    • Jesus uses the example of a child to illustrate that greatness in the kingdom of heaven requires humility. This humility involves serving and caring for those who are weak, vulnerable, or have gone astray.
    • The disciples, and by extension all believers, are reminded to return to a childlike faith, characterized by dependence on Jesus rather than seeking social status or reputation.
  2. The Parable of the Lost Sheep:

    • Jesus tells the parable of the shepherd who leaves the 99 sheep to find the one that has wandered off. This illustrates God's relentless pursuit of those who are lost or have strayed from the faith.
    • The parable emphasizes that the shepherd (representing Jesus) does not scold or shame the lost sheep but rejoices when it is found, highlighting God's love and grace.
  3. The Role of the 99:

    • The 99 sheep represent those who are in the fold, the community of believers. They are called to work together, protect one another, and not turn inward but remain open to welcoming back those who have wandered.
    • The sermon challenges believers to examine who or what they are following and to ensure that their primary focus is on following Jesus.
  4. Prayer and Contending for the Lost:

    • Josh encourages the congregation to pray for those who are lost or wandering. He shares a powerful testimony of a man who prayed for his brother's salvation for 18 years, demonstrating the importance of persistent prayer.
    • The sermon concludes with a call to action for the congregation to write down names of those they are praying for and to place them in a basket as a symbol of their commitment to pray and contend for their salvation.

Small Group Discussion Questions:

  1. Reflect on Humility:

    • How does Jesus' teaching on humility challenge your understanding of greatness? In what ways can you cultivate a childlike faith in your daily life?
  2. Understanding the Parable:

    • What does the parable of the lost sheep reveal about God's character and His priorities? How does this parable encourage you in your own spiritual journey?
  3. Role of the 99:

    • As part of the "99," how can we ensure that we are not turning inward but are actively seeking to welcome and support those who have wandered? What practical steps can we take as a small group to reach out to those who are lost?
  4. Prayer and Action:

    • Who are the "lost sheep" in your life that you feel called to pray for? How can your small group support each other in prayer and accountability for these individuals?
  5. Personal Reflection:

    • Have you ever experienced a time when you felt like the lost sheep? How did God pursue you during that time, and how can that experience shape your approach to others who are wandering?
  6. Application:

    • What specific actions can you take this week to embody the humility and love that Jesus calls us to in this passage? How can you be intentional about following Jesus in your context?

This sermon challenges us to redefine greatness through the lens of humility and to actively participate in God's mission to seek and save the lost. As a small group, may we encourage one another to live out these truths in our communities and personal lives.
